Micro Ships PC-cillin 2000, First Desktop Antivirus Solution
to be Certified for Microsoft Windows 2000
Enhanced
version of award-winning consumer desktop antivirus software
certified to support Application Specifications for Windows
2000 Professional by VeriTest labs
Cupertino, CA - April 14, 2000
- Trend Micro Inc. (Nasdaq:TMIC), a leading provider of
Internet content security, today announced the availability
of PC-cillin?2000, the latest version of Trend Micro's personal
computer virus protection software, and the first antivirus
solution to be certified for Microsoft Windows 2000 by VeriTest
independent lab services. Compatible with the Windows 95/98,
Windows NT and now the Windows 2000 operating system, PC-cillin
2000 has been enhanced to include real-time email virus
scanning, manual-scan capabilities for personal folders,
and incremental virus pattern updates.
PC-cillin 2000 provides users
with a reliable and easily managed antivirus solution for
Windows 2000. A 500-page certification checklist, developed
by Microsoft and VeriTest, under which only applications
meeting Windows 2000 specifications are certified, helps
to ensure the seamless integration of product and operating
system. Applications, like PC-cillin 2000, which have passed
certification will require less administration, be easier
to deploy and manage, and provide an overall consistent
experience for the user. Additionally, users are able to
benefit from self-repairing installations, smooth Windows
upgrade paths, and roaming-enabled user settings. Microsoft
encourages all their customers to look for products with
the "Certified for Microsoft Windows" logo.
"We are pleased to announce
that Trend Micro's PC-cillin 2000 has passed the stringent
requirements of being Windows 2000 Certified," says
John McVay, Microsoft Logo Programs Manager for VeriTest.
"Along with Trend Micro's VirusBuster 2000 for the
Japanese market, this is the first and only anti-virus application
to be Certified for Windows."
PC-cillin 2000 users operating
on Outlook Express 4.0, Eudora Pro 4.0, or any other POP3
mail client can take advantage of the real-time email virus
scanning feature - now viruses can be detected and cleaned
from incoming messages before they have a chance to infect
the desktop. Users of Outlook 97, Outlook 98, and Outlook
2000 will have the additional ability to scan emails stored
in their personal folders for viruses. Incremental virus
pattern updates also aid in minimizing download time; only
the newest virus patterns are added since the previous release.
Given the destructive nature
and wide proliferation of recent email-borne viruses and
Trojans, such as Chernobyl or Pretty Park, having the ability
to scan for viruses and malicious code hidden within incoming
mail messages is vital to maintaining the security of individual
computers as well as the larger Internet community.
"With the extensive use
of email and web access among PC users, the home computer
has become part of a huge network - the Internet,"
said Eva Chen, chief technology officer at Trend Micro.
"With that in mind, Trend Micro has applied some of
the same antivirus technology to the desktop level that
we have for our gateway and network protection software,
in order to ensure a safe computing experience."
The PC-cillin 2000 desktop
antivirus solution blocks all kinds of viruses -- malicious
Java applets, Active X controls and web scripts -- that
can be passed through web sites, emails, network servers,
CD-ROMs or floppy disks. PC-cillin 2000 also features web
site blocking options to prevent access to offensive web
sites.
