House Call - Frequently Asked Questions

Why did nothing happen with I clicked on the logo for a free scan?

It takes a minute or so for HouseCall to prepare for scanning. The amount of time varies according to your modem speed and traffic on the Internet.

It is also possible that HouseCall doesn’t recognize your browser. HouseCall works better with Explorer (3.0 or above), which supports silent installation of the ActiveX components onto your system.

If you use a browser that does not support ActiveX, such as Netscape Navigator,  HouseCall will point you to a page where you can download HouseCall's Java support components. After downloading the said components, follow the simple installation instructions, then restart your browser.  You must have Netscape Navigator 3.01 or above to use HouseCall.

Why didn't scan start after I downloaded the logo?

You don't need the logo for scanning. It is only needed by webmasters who would like to host the free scanning service on their web site.  When installing the logo on your site, make sure you link the image to the HouseCall site (http://housecall.antivirus.com).

HouseCall found a virus. Now what do I do?

You may do one or a combination of the following:

  • Attempt to clean the virus
  • Delete the infected file
  • Click on the name of the virus displayed by HouseCall to learn more about the virus

I read that HouseCall doesn’t offer "real-time protection". What does that mean?

Real-time protection means that all file activity on a computer is scanned continuously. This ensures that any known virus attempting to invade your system is caught even before it has a chance to do anything.

HouseCall is an "on-demand scanner". It can only detect viruses already on your system at the time you performed the scan. If you open an infected Word document attached to an e-mail or insert an infected diskette into your computer, after scanning, HouseCall won’t detect it.

This service merely offers a means for a quick check-up of your system.  For real protection, a good antivirus software must be installed on your computer. One that provides not only on-demand scanning, but also real-time and scheduled scanning.  Other key features to look for are the easy update of virus patterns (look for phrases like one-button update), and the ability to scan Internet traffic.

PC-cillin is one such software. It has won numerous awards, and is a solid choice for the individual user. For businesses we recommend OfficeScan Corporate Edition, which features centralized control and reporting.
